How to Test the Antioxidant Property of Boron Nitride Coatings
Boron Nitride coatings have gained immense popularity in recent times due to their properties of strength and thermal stability. These coatings are used extensively in different industries and are known for their excellent performance under extreme conditions. One of the significant concerns while using these coatings is their durability against oxidation. Therefore, it becomes essential to test the antioxidant property of such coatings.
Several techniques can be used to test the antioxidant property of Boron Nitride coatings. The easiest and most common of all methods is the Salt Spray Chamber test. This test can be carried out as per the ASTM B117 standard. In this test, the sample coated with Boron Nitride is exposed to an aerosol mixture of salt and water at a controlled temperature and humidity for a specific duration. This exposure leads to the formation of an oxide layer, and the duration taken for the formation of the layer is a measure of the antioxidant property of the coating. The longer the coating can resist the oxidation process, the higher will be the antioxidant property.
Another common method used for testing the antioxidant property of Boron Nitride Coatings is the TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis) test. In this test, the sample is heated in a controlled atmosphere, and the rate of weight loss is monitored. The temperature at which the weight loss starts and ends is noted, and this is used to identify the thermal stability and oxidation behavior of the coating. The higher the temperature at which oxidation occurs, the better is the antioxidant property.
Additionally, the Outgassing test can also be used to test the antioxidant behavior of Boron Nitride coatings. In this test, the sample is exposed to a particular temperature, which leads to the release of gases in the coating. These gases are then analyzed using Mass Spectroscopy, and the presence of oxygen and other oxidizing gases is detected. The presence of these gases at lower levels is an indication of better antioxidant property.
In conclusion, the antioxidant property of Boron Nitride coatings is a crucial aspect that needs to be tested before they are used in any application. Salt Spray Chamber, TGA, and Outgassing tests are some of the most commonly used techniques to test the antioxidant behavior of these coatings. A thorough analysis of the findings obtained from these tests can help in identifying the effectiveness and durability of the Boron Nitride coatings.
