Boron Nitride Coatings For Mold Release in The Glass Industry
Mar 27, 2025
Boron nitride (BN) coatings are widely used as release agents in the glass manufacturing industry, especially in high temperature molding processes, due to their excellent high temperature resistance, chemical inertness, lubricity and mold release properties. The following are its main applications and advantages:
1. Application Scenarios
(1) Glass bottle/ware molding
In the press molding process of glass bottles, wine glasses and other products, the boron nitride coating on the mold surface can prevent the glass from sticking, improve the efficiency of mold release, and reduce the surface defects of the products (e.g. scratches, pockmarks).
(2) Optical Glass/Specialty Glass Manufacturing
In the high-temperature melt molding of optical glass and liquid crystal glass substrates (e.g. LCD, OLED), boron nitride coatings can reduce the chemical reaction between the mold and the glass and ensure high surface finish.
(3)Glass fiber production
(4) In the process of glass fiber drawing, boron nitride coatings coated on the drawing dies can reduce the coefficient of friction, reduce wire breakage, and improve production efficiency.
(4) Photovoltaic Glass (Solar Glass)
In the tempering or coating process of photovoltaic glass, boron nitride coatings can prevent the adhesion of glass to the roller conveyor or mold and reduce surface damage.
2. Advantages of Boron Nitride Coating
✅ High temperature resistance: it can withstand high temperatures above 1000°C for glass melt molding (usually 600-1200°C).
✅ Low coefficient of friction: excellent lubrication performance, reducing the friction between glass and mold, prolonging the life of the mold.
✅ Chemically inert: does not react with molten glass, avoiding contamination of glass surface.
✅ Easy mold release: prevents glass adhesion, reduces mold release agent residue and improves product yield.
✅ Antioxidant: It is not easy to oxidize at high temperature, and its stability is better than graphite-based mold release agents.
3. Usage
Spraying/brushing: Apply boron nitride suspension (water-based or solvent-based) evenly on the surface of the mold, and form a dense coating after drying.
High temperature sintering: Some boron nitride coatings need to be cured at high temperature to enhance adhesion and wear resistance.
Regular maintenance: According to the production situation, the coating needs to be re-coated periodically to maintain the mold release effect.
With the advantages of high temperature resistance, good lubricity and no contamination of glass, boron nitride coatings have become the ideal release agent for high-end glass manufacturing industries (such as optical glass, photovoltaic glass, glass fiber), which can significantly improve production efficiency and product yield.
