Difference Between Granular Boron Nitride And Spherical Boron Nitride

Dec 26, 2023

Hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) and Cubic Boron Nitride (cBN) are two different forms of boron nitride compounds that exhibit distinct properties and characteristics.

hBN, also known as white graphene, has a layered hexagonal structure similar to graphite. It is an excellent electrical insulator, has high thermal conductivity, and is resistant to chemicals and corrosion. Due to its anisotropic structure, hBN has a high degree of stiffness in one direction and can be used as a filler to improve the strength and toughness of composites.

On the other hand, cBN has a crystal structure similar to diamond and is one of the hardest materials known to man. It is highly abrasion-resistant and has excellent thermal stability, making it suitable for high-temperature applications. cBN is widely used as a cutting tool material, particularly in the machining of hard and abrasive materials.

In terms of morphology, hBN is typically produced as platelets or flakes, while cBN is synthesized in a spherical or cubic shape. The spherical shape of cBN provides a greater surface area, making it easier to disperse and mix with other materials.

Despite their differences, both hBN and cBN possess unique and valuable properties that make them useful in a variety of applications, including electronics, composites, and cutting tools.
