Difference Between Hexagonal Boron Nitride And Porous Boron Nitride And Their Different Uses

Boron nitride (BN) is a ceramic material that exists in two forms - cubic boron nitride (c-BN) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). While c-BN is used primarily as an abrasive and cutting tool material, h-BN has several applications due to its unique properties. In recent years, two forms of h-BN namely, boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) and porous boron nitride (p-BN) or porous BN (pBN) have gained significant attention in the research community.
Compared to h-BN, BNNTs have a tubular structure with a diameter in the nanometer range. BNNTs possess excellent thermal and chemical stability, high mechanical strength, and unique electronic properties. These properties make them ideal for use as advanced materials for electronic devices, nanocomposites, hydrogen storage materials, and biological sensors.
On the other hand, p-BN refers to a porous form of h-BN with a three-dimensional interconnected network of pores that range from nanometers to micrometers. Porous BN is characterized by its high surface area, high thermal conductivity, high chemical stability, and tunable porosity. These properties, combined with its low density, make p-BN an ideal candidate for applications in catalyst supports, gas separation, thermal insulation, and energy storage.
In summary, while BNNTs are used mainly in electronic and mechanical applications, p-BN finds its usage as a porous material having significant applications in catalysis, energy storage, and separation of gases.
