Hexagonal Boron Nitride, An Insulating Material With Good Thermal Conductivity

Aug 12, 2024

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a unique compound that has excellent thermal conductivity properties despite being an insulating material. This is due to the unique properties of its crystal structure, which allows heat to be conducted through the material with minimal thermal resistance.

The crystal structure of hBN consists of layers of hexagonal boron and nitrogen atoms that are arranged in a lattice pattern. These layers are held together by relatively weak van der Waals forces, allowing them to slide past one another with minimal deformation or disruption to the thermal conductivity of the material.

Moreover, the hexagonal shape of the boron and nitrogen atoms generates anisotropy in hBN, leading to outstanding thermal conductivity along the c-axis, which is perpendicular to the layers, and a good thermal conductivity in the basal plane. This unique crystal structure results in high thermal conductivity in the direction perpendicular to the planes, while in the plane direction, the heat conduction is mediated by phonon scattering, leading to contributions from both normal and Umklapp processes.
